Kristina is seventeen years old and grew up in Ukraine, in a small town near the Carpathian Mountains, close to the Hungarian and Romanian borders. Her mom’s family is from Hungary, and she grew up speaking Hungarian at home. When she started school, she learned Ukrainian and picked up Russian through TV, radio, and games.

We met Kristina through our work with the Rotary exchange program, though she wasn’t technically an exchange student. Ten months prior to our meeting, a friend of Kristina’s family had called to offer their home in California so that she could escape the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. When her mom asked if she wanted to go, she answered, “To the other continent with the language that I’m not speaking that well? Yeah, let’s do that.” She went through the arduous task of getting the right paperwork, took two long bus rides across borders, and finally flew to California.

It was an honor to speak with Kristina, who expressed herself eloquently in her fourth language.
